This study experimentally examined obstacle avoidance behavior in young children to inform safety education and the design of safe environments. The experiment was conducted as a replication of a previous study (Ejiri & Amano, 2014). To explore whether environmental modifications or verbal instructions could influence children's risk-avoidance behavior, we attached a bell to the obstacle and instructed the children to avoid making it ring while passing. Participants were 59 children aged 4 to 6 years. Horizontal bar obstacles were set at heights corresponding to 40% (low condition) or 50% (high condition) of each child's stature, and their avoidance strategies were observed. Consistent with previous findings, children adjusted their behavior according to obstacle height: they were more likely to crawl under than step over in the high condition, and passing under resulted in fewer contacts with the obstacle. However, environmental modifications and verbal instructions in this study did not improve children's riskavoidance behavior. These findings are discussed in relation to the developmental characteristics of obstacle avoidance, implications for health and safety education, and considerations for safe childcare environments. |
