内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This study examines the operation of an endowed course at a regional private university through the author's own experience, employing an autoethnographic approach. Endowed courses are programs established when corporations provide financial or human resources to universities. In addition to their educational functions, they serve as platforms for industry–university collaboration and external funding. In practice, however, while such systems formally exist, operational frameworks are often underdeveloped, leaving management tasks heavily dependent on frontline practitioners and resulting in contradictions and excessive burdens.
The analysis focuses on the concepts of institutional figuration and strategic ignorance. Institutional figuration refers to situations where, despite the absence of formalized structures, everyday translational practices by practitioners temporarily "shape" the appearance of a functioning system. Strategic ignorance denotes the deliberate neglect or "willful not-knowing" of problems by actors, enabling them to avoid responsibility and preserve institutional ambiguity. This study demonstrates how these two mechanisms reinforce one another, generating a cycle that entrenches structural fatigue at the frontline.
Specifically, undocumented practices are inherited as "customs," compelling practitioners to respond improvisationally. These improvisations accumulate to sustain institutional figuration, while simultaneously inducing strategic ignorance, whereby other actors refrain from addressing structural deficiencies. As a result, reforms are postponed, and fatigue persists. This cycle is further reinforced by asymmetric power relations between the university and the corporation, as well as by the limited resources of regional private institutions.
The theoretical contribution of this study lies in bringing endowed courses—largely overlooked in previous research on university–industry collaboration—into focus as an object of analysis, thereby clarifying the interplay between institutional gaps and everyday practices. Practically, the findings underscore the need to clarify task allocation and responsibilities, formalize contracts and guidelines, and strengthen governance structures. Such measures are essential to enabling endowed courses to function sustainably as platforms for co-creation between universities and local communities.
