| 内容記述 | While there is currently much discussion about separate surnames for married couples, this issue dates back to the postwar revision of the Civil Code. The issue of married surnames was first raised in the 1950s, and concrete efforts toward separate surnames began in the 1970s. In 1996, the Ministry of Justice compiled a Civil Code revision bill that would include optional separate surnames for married couples, but the government failed to submit it to the Diet. The issue was discussed again in 2025, but with a similar outcome. With all the issues now being discussed, the final decision will be made at the political level. On the other hand, some argue that while separate surnames for married couples should be allowed, common-law marriage should also be recognized as an option. Rather than relying on the framework of legal marriage, it is necessary to consider diverse forms of marriage and family systems. | |||||||||||
