| 内容記述 | This paper maintains that translating foreign (English) poems can be a form of literary criticism by examining the translation of John Donne by Toru HOSHINO (1925-2009), a Japanese poet and scholar of English literature. In translating English poems into Japanese, we begin to thoroughly analyze and interpret them as the same as criticism to decide the most appropriately translated words and expressions but cannot directly reflect in translation the process of criticizing the original poems. The possibility of translation as a form of criticism is judged by whether we can read Japanese translated poems as a Japanese poem or by whether we can deepen our understanding of the original poems through translation. In Hoshino's translation of John Donne, a literary style as a Japanese poem is definitely found, which encourages us to interpret diversely the original Donne poems. T. S. Eliot, who had revived the Metaphysical poets in the history of Englis literature at the beginning of the twentieth century, brought John Donne closer to us the modern men through his criticism, while Hoshino also did in the same way through his translation. | |||||||||||
