| 内容記述 | In this paper I investigate the relationship between US Churches of Christ missionaries Orville D. and D’Lila Beth Bixler and the family of the Japanese politician Takeshi YAMAZAKI, who was at one time the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Japan. The investigation is done through the analysis of archival materials available at Ibaraki Prefectural Archives and History Museum. The materials in the Takeshi YAMAZAKI collection contain letters and postcards written mostly by Kozaburo YAMAZAKI, the son of Takeshi YAMAZAKI, or the Bixlers. Kozaburo, who studied at George Pepperdine University in mid 1950s, was financially and spiritually supported by the Bixlers. The relationship between the Bixlers and Kozaburo, however, does not simply fall into the scheme of paternalism/dependency; rather, the line that separated the supporter and the beneficiary was often fluid. It was so, partly because Kozaburo’s father was a notable politician in Japan. Kozaburo’s incisive observations of the Bixlers and American Christianity also helped to blur the line. | |||||||||||
