内容記述 The purpose of this paper is to grasp clues to understanding the current measures against curriculum overload by examining the “Selected Educational Content” of the Guidelines for the Courses of Study revised in 1998.
Curriculum overload is a situation in which children and teachers are overloaded due to an imbalance between instructional time and instructional content. Current schooling is in a state of overload due to the addition of English language and programming education while maintaining traditional subject education. Resolving this situation is an urgent issue for the next Courses of Study.
The Curriculum Council, which reviewed the 1998 Courses of Study, carefully selected those that were difficult for children to understand or that overlapped with other grades. By doing so, members of the council aimed to cultivate the “Zest for Living” by ensuring that children had ample time to investigate and think for themselves.
The current discussion of curriculum overload rejects the “careful selection of educational content” in 1998 of the time and envisions a curriculum that emphasizes academic systematics. However, there is concern that this may obscure the reality of the child.
To avoid curriculum overload, it is important to create a system that allows for communication among those involved in the deliberations and to balance the child’s perspective with the academic perspective.
