内容記述 | This is a study of occupational careers of 100 white-collar workers who graduated from the economics department of a private university, “K” in Tokyo. It finds, among others, that they tend to develop their career within an enterprise-type labor market including subsidiaries and suppliers. The transition probability of their job changes shows such characteristics that about 40 percent of them started their occupational career in sales job, then about a third of them moved on to import/export jobs or an assignment abroad, and that about a half of the career starters in sales job remain in the same job after two job changes. Further, it shows that about 60% of whitecollar workers develop themselves in a core job, pursuing a “specialist” rather than a “generalist” career. When it comes to implementing innovative leadership on the job, according to their self evaluation on the job performance, their performance level is not impressive. Yet, the interviews with survey participants show that the critical incidents in their career, such as assignments abroad, the management of M&A projects, development of new business domains, the decision making to cope with the crush of the world financial markets, and so on, strengthened the interviewees’ self-efficacy. This, in turn, contributed to their job performance. They also recognize that the impacts of uncontrollable incidents affect one's occupational career. |
