内容記述 | In previous articles, we pointed out that the Japanese test book system does not have a continuity that is essential in the concept construction on students. One of the main reasons is that the each textbook used in officially accredited school has to pass the test of Department of Education of Science (DSE). This system guarantees to maintain the minimum quality in education. This system is sometimes criticized as official censorship, especially in the field of social science. This system also shows merits like preventing the absurdity like the Darwin controversy that observed in United States of America. Science text in recent years became thin in pages, as thick text with volumes knowledge to be taught do not suit for average student. As the result, the pages of textbooks are limited and became thinner. Also the use of illustration and photos are spreading in order to make textbook easier to reader. This caused that the text allocated to each topics became shorter. Sometimes text is insufficiently short, so the average student cannot acquire the concept that the topic required to teach. Writers of science textbooks tries many methods to incorporate required stage of concept acquisition within short space allowed to them. Their efforts are insufficiently conducted because of limitation required by DSE. In order to revitalize science education, fundamental reform of DSE policy is required. In addition to this the part of new concept acquisition (or paradigm formation is neglected in current text books. Re-evaluation of the problem of concept formation (or paradigm acquisition) is necessary as the basis of textbook reformation. The school system also suffers the immanent problem of teacher quality. There are too many teachers those only keep presenting students the phrases or procedure described on the textbook. Re-education of science teachers to recognize the importance of concept formation is required. |
