Through a questionnaire survey conducted on students participating in the Practical Training Course for Clothing Construction (Western Dressmaking: sleeping wear and Japanese Dressmaking: yukata) at Ochanomizu University in 2016, we sought to explore the level of the students’ basic knowledge and skills in Clothes Making, and to consider measures to improve teaching methods that were found insufficient. Results revealed demands for the use of actual samples to enable better understanding in the structures of clothing, and photographs and video materials to confirm the manufacturing steps that could not be fully understood through drawings and texts in hand-outs. These teaching materials can be useful not only for each individual to focus and confirm aspects that were difficult to understand, but also for individuals with different levels of progress and for those who chose to continue to work outside of classes. In order to improve, it is essential to upgrade equipment in the practice rooms and facilitate internet site for publications, while creating the desired teaching materials. Due to lack of knowledge in garment making and the names for each parts of clothing, there were some cases where start of the class were delayed and garments made in a misguided way. One way of remedying this issue is to liaison with other subjects so as to provide students with opportunities to learn the basics of clothing before the start of their practical training. Furthermore, our goal is to form an organic linkage between lecture and practical courses through collaboration and information sharing among the faculty, and thus enhance the quality of the learning. |
