Nankichi Niimi's literary masterpiece, Gongitsune, serves as standard educational material for teaching Japanese at many Japanese primary schools. Tatsuki & Fushimi (2004) reported that some readers believe Hyoju able to understand both Gon's intention of compensating for depriving Hyoju's mother of the eels and Gon's feelings of wanting to make friends with Hyoju because they are now both alone. Read properly, Hyoju clearly does not understand Gon's intention and feelings, but this misinterpretation still occurs. Researchers determined this was due to readers strongly identifying and empathizing with Gon, the protagonist. This article examines the effects of empathy and belief on the misinterpretation of Gongitsune with thirty-seven university students as subjects. A 5-page questionnaire was distributed. On pages 1 and 2, subjects were asked to answer the empathy test and four belief questions about novel endings and mutual understanding. After answering these questions, an examiner read the story aloud while subjects simultaneously read the story silently to themselves. On page 3, subjects were asked to answer four questions, without referring the text, about if Hyoju understood Gon's feelings and intentions, ranking their responses by six degrees of understanding from 1=very well understood to 6=not understood at all. On page 4, subjects were then assigned specific story passages to read and answered five yes or no questions to confirm their understanding of the story. Next, subjects were again allowed to refer to the text. On page 5, they answered the same questions as on page 3, regarding Hyoju's understanding of Gon's feelings and intentions. Results suggested that the higher the empathy test score, the more subjects misinterpreted Gongitsune, but subject belief did not apparently effect such misinterpretation. |
