Single parents rearing children has been increasing during last two decades in Japan. For these families, governments provided a variety of formal supports such as a subsidy called “Child Rearing Allowance for Single Parents”. However, little was known about whether local governments provide sufficient information about their supports (e.g., financial support, consultation services) for single-parent families. To examine this issue, the present study analyzed “Child Rearing Support Booklets” issued by local governments (city, town, and villages) in Ibaraki prefecture and investigated what kind of and how many items of government’s supports for single-parent families were described in the booklets. The results showed that most of the local governments informed their financial supports for single-parent families in their booklets. On the other hand, consultation services for these families were less informed in the booklets. These results suggest that further information about government’s support for singleparent families should be provided through various kinds of the media including Child Rearing Support Booklets. |
