| 内容記述 | In this paper I explain and analyze in detail the function of information-giving maeoki prefaces in Japanese written/spoken texts. The concept of information-giving maeoki was first proposed by Onuma (2003, 2007). The word maeoki literally means ‘before-put’, that is put before the conclusion of a text or before the main point of a compound sentence. There are many kinds of maeoki, including maeoki for politeness, maeoki for proposing themes, and maeoki which function to soften tension at a first meeting. While these kinds of maeoki tend to be expressed in a single sentence, information-giving maeoki tend to operate on the text level and have yet to be studied in detail. Senders (writers/speakers) use informationgiving maeoki to give detailed and precise information about an important word or concept in the conclusion of the text. Information-giving maeoki also allow senders to build a common ground of knowledge with their receivers (readers/hearers) on which they can proceed to explain the main theme with confidence that their receivers will be able to understand their talk. Thus, information-giving maeoki are very important and indispensable in Japanese texts. |
