The present article examines the social support for families of children with special health care needs(CSHCN). We report the following evidence from empirical and practical research on families caring for CSHCN: A) Mothers of CSHCN showed a lower workforce participation compared to other Japanese mothers. The majority of the mothers expressed their need to participate in paid work in the future. B) Specialists such as nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals can provide care co-ordination service to families of CSHCN. Care co-ordination played a key role in not only coordinating care services, but also in promoting mothers’ self-confidence and reducing the burden of care work. C) Families of children with hearing impairments need early family-centered support and care since the children are diagnosed within their first year of life. Specialist teams of doctors, speech therapists, and professionals in special education should provide information on a child’s development and support services available to them. This may help families understand their children and keep a positive attitude toward raising their children. These findings are discussed in relation to the importance of providing family-centered support for families caring for CSHCN. |
