The purpose of this study was to investigate what kinds of meaning cancer patients find in their participation in a self-help group (SHG), which comprises patients pursuing diet therapy and examine the factors that influence the meaning of SHG. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 cancer patients, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. As a result, the following categories were identified as the meanings that the patients find in the SHG: 1) acquisition of psychological support, 2) relation to social network, 3) relation to support from others, 4) opportunities for understanding and collecting information about diet therapy, 5) realizing the helper-therapy principle, 6) appetite satisfaction, 7) self-disclosure and freeing the self, and 8) humanistic development. Additionally, the results indicate that the sessions at fixed intervals and membership in the SHG influence how the SHG works for patients. |
