内容記述 | During the years 1922 through 1941, or the late Taisho and early Showa periods in pre-WWII Japan, five American Christian missionaries and their families established churches in five rural areas of northern Ibaraki prefecture and southern Fukushima prefecture. Although each of the five churches and their work was distinct, those churches were located close enough, so that the five missionaries regularly helped one another. Eventually, the missionaries referred to their collective efforts as “Kuji valley evangelism,” named after the Kuji river that ran nearby. Besides evangelism, the missionaries associated with Kuji valley evangelism engaged with such social endeavors as kindergartens, a Bible school, and health food productions and sales. The numerical result of their mission efforts was minimal, but such endeavors as food sales, originally begun as a means to self-support their mission work, were appreciated by Americans in Japan, as well as local Japanese people. We investigate the various efforts of Kuji valley evangelism through the notion of “holistic mission” to argue that their work, consisting of both evangelism and social responsibility, could be interpreted as an unintended forerunner of what came to be known as holistic mission. | |||||||||||||||||
